Alexander Gustafsson Retires from MMA

Yesterday the UFC held an event in Gustafsson's hometown Stockholm, Sweden. The main event saw Alexander Gustafsson facing Anthony Smith.

Anthony Smith dominated most of the fight, but Gustafsson started to show life in the fourth round. Gustafsson landed some significant strikes in the fourth and went for a takedown, but Smith stuffed the takedown. Both scrambled before Smith took Gustafsson's back. Smith then submitted Gustafsson with a nasty rear naked choke.

Afterwards, Gustafsson took off his gloves and said, "the show is over guys." He then laid his gloves in the cage and walked out.

In the post press conference, Gustafsson went on to explain that he feels like he doesn't "have it anymore" and that he makes "too many mistakes" he knows he shouldn't be making. He went on to say that money doesn't matter him, if he can't "be at the top" then he doesn't want to do it anymore.

Gustafsson has had a tremendous career and we here at Backstage Heat wish him all the luck in whatever his life has for him next. Thank you Gustafsson.
